Photobucket Plugs Security Holes
Sharing photos with friends and family via some kind of online service such as Flickr or Photobucket has become the social norm. After all you can go to pretty much any Myspace profile and see a digital picture that’s hosted by one of these companies. How would you feel if I told you that doing so could give anyone access to all your pictures, including the dirty ones that you were sure you set to private so no one else could see? Apparently that was the case with Photobucket. Although the security hole was plugged on Monday it was very possible to see a person’s private photo according to one website.
“All that was needed was the user ID of someone with a private album on Photobucket and the file name of one photo in their album, said Byron Ng, a Vancouver, B.C.-based computer technician who exposes security flaws in social networks and other sites.”
So next time you are considering uploading pictures that you don’t want anyone to see just remember that there’s always someone out there that will find a way.
